Cycle CECR : La galerie d’art (A1–A2)

Grade - -
-

Students explore the significance of animals in Indigenous cultures in Canada through video and literature. They reflect on which animal represents them and communicate this meaning through visual art and oral interaction. The scenario culminates in an authentic art gallery experience where students host visiting classes and explain their artwork in French.

This CEFR cycle presents an authentic action-oriented task in which students explore the significance of animals in Indigenous cultures and reflect on their own identity.

Through video viewing, literature, interaction, and guided planning, students learn to express how an animal can represent who they are and explain the meaning behind their choices.

Through a structured progression (oral → reading → interaction → production), students develop their listening and speaking skills while building confidence in expressing personal ideas and emotions.

The cycle includes:
- a listening activity based on a video with three guided viewings
- a shared reading of a picture book with oral discussion
- structured oral interaction using modelled sentence patterns
- hands-on creation of a 2D or 3D artwork using a variety of materials
- guided writing to describe and explain the artwork
- a final task where students host an art gallery and present their work to a real audience

This resource aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and integrates key elements of the Neurolinguistic Approach (NLA), including oral-first learning, modelling of language structures, repeated interaction, and the progression from oral language to reading and writing.

Students act as social agents by using French to present their artwork, explain its meaning, and interact with visitors in an authentic gallery setting.

This cycle can be adapted to meet the needs of different learners and classroom contexts.
